Chemical engineering represents the interface between molecular sciences and engineering. Traditionally linked to fuel combustion and energy systems, today's chemical engineers are spearheading new developments in medicine, biotechnology, advanced materials, energy, consumer products and environmental solutions.
The Chemical engineer has a multidisciplinary knowledge that allows him to perform in many different areas (design, production, environmental management, laboratory and industrial quality control, biotechnology, energy, new materials, marketing and management).
The initial courses include: chemistry, physics, mathematics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics and information technology. Case studies, projects and laboratory work are done in each semester. The final courses cover topics including: separation processes, reaction engineering, materials science, biochemistry and microbiology, engineering mathematics and economics. Case studies, project and laboratory work continue to be done.
The Degree in Chemical Engineering has a duration of three years (six semesters). Students must be approved in all the subjects of the course. The presentation and discussion of a report for the final training project on the 6th semester during the exam period is compulsory. The following competences must be acquired:
(A) Generic: Ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyse and interpret data; Ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economics, environmental, social, health and safety and sustainability; Ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems.
(B) Specific: Supervise the manufacturing, industrial services and utilities; Design equipment; Collaborate in the development of new products and new processes; Supervise production management teams and control laboratory.
After finishing his degree, the student can enter the job market and/or access the Master's degree in Chemical Engineering of ISEP. Some companies have received our students in final degree internships: A. Ramalhão, Águas do Porto, Amorim & Irmãos, Chemilinks, CIN, ETANOR/PENHA, ETAS, SEC, SILLIKER, Sogevinus Finewines, Symington Vinhos, Tintas Barbot.
